Movie night – My Dinner with Andre

This time we’ll watch My Dinner with Andre (1981), directed by Louis Malle and starring Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory.

Wally, a struggling New York playwright, reluctantly agrees to have dinner with his old friend Andre, a theatre director who walked away from his career to travel the world looking for something more. Over one long meal in a Manhattan restaurant, the two talk about everything: art, fear, love, routine, and what it really means to be alive. Nothing else happens. And yet it’s one of the most gripping films you’ll ever see.

And then there’s the conversation…

With almost the whole film taking place at a single table, the dialogue becomes the story, the action and the suspense. Wally loves the comfort of everyday life, and Andre is searching for something deeper. You’ll probably find yourself agreeing with both of them, and you may want to take a side by the end.

It’s the perfect film for a movie night that begins with dinner. So come eat with us, stay for the movie, and stick around afterwards to keep the conversation going. We won’t hold it against you if it lasts longer than the film.
